A site which we host at [a large, publicly traded hosting company] came under attack. We were notified by our own monitoring, and were able to determine the nature of the attack from our log files…and, working with the hosting company’s technicians we blocked traffic from those addresses. The hosting company responded to our requests quickly.
However, a couple of months later, a site which we host at ZeroLag also came under attack. In this case:
- We were notified by a phone call from a ZeroLag engineer, not our own monitoring
- The engineer rebooted the server
- He then immediately (on a Saturday) analyzed the log files to determine the nature of the attack
- On his own initiative, he blocked the appropriate IP addresses
- Finally, he sent a write-up of the incident for me to pass along to managers
The two experiences were radically different. The other hosting company was happy to help with anything specific that we told them to do, but discovering the issue, analyzing it, and choosing the appropriate action was entirely our responsibility. ZeroLag noticed that there was a problem and proactively took the initiative to analyze and respond.
