Server Management Model

In the world of hosting, there are two approaches when providing dedicated servers. This difference concerns the way the server is managed, and who manages it. Some companies take the approach of managing the server for the customer, while others require that the customer manage the server by themselves. At ZeroLag, we are proud to introduce our new Server Management Model that allows our customers to choose the level of management that their server receives.

There are two levels in our Server Management Model: Managed and Unmanaged. Depending on how your company is structured and what you are looking for in a hosting provider, we can provide exactly what you need through one of these two options. This kind of flexibility is unique to ZeroLag's dedicated server offerings.

What is an Unmanaged Server?
If you have an experienced system administrator working for your company, and you'd like to be able to manage your dedicated server to your specifications, then you will probably opt for an unmanaged server. While an unmanaged server still includes remote monitoring and other useful tools, we ultimately leave the management of the server up to you. You are free to customize the server as you desire. In the event of any problems with your server, we will always be available to assist you. For details on what is and is not included in an unmanaged server, please see the comparison chart below.

What is a Managed Server?
If your company doesn't have the resources or the desire to manage its own dedicated server, then you will probably opt for a managed server. By choosing a dedicated server, your company gains the peace of mind that your server is being properly maintained by a staff of experienced system administrators. We will provide all the necessary monitoring, software updates, and security patches to ensure that your server is safe, stable, and secure. We have such confidence in our ability to provide a stable server for your company, that we assume all responsibility for any issues that impact your server's ability to perform optimally.

Please note that the currently supported operating systems for our managed servers are: Debian Linux 4.0 (etch) and Windows 2003.

Comparison Chart
Both our managed and unmanaged servers are complimented by a wide range of useful features, but they also have features unique to their server management level. The similarities and differences are illustrated below. The basic concept behind the unmanaged server is that the customer will do most administration, such as security patching, on their own. For this reason, we cannot guarantee the stability of an unmanaged server as we do with managed servers. Additionally, the custom performance statistics package that we provide for managed servers is not available for unmanaged servers. It's also important to note that since ZeroLag performs the administration of managed servers, root/administrator access is not granted to the customers of managed servers.

Which is Right for Me?
The decision between a managed an unmanaged server may be difficult for your company to make, and it must be carefully considered. The easiest way to determine the right choice is to assess your company's current situation. Do you have the staff required to fully maintain a server? Do you require the flexibility of an unmanaged server, or would you prefer the stability of a managed server? Every company's situation is different, so we are available to discuss your options if you are unsure.
